Saint George or, George of Lyyda was a soldier in the Roman army during the late 3rd and early 4th century. He was martyred for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith. At some point, the legend of St. George and the dragon appeared about the saint slaying a dragon who had been terrorizing a town when human sacrifice began to be offered, when all the other wealth had ran out. The story became an allegory for Christ defeating Satan.
