Lenten Reflection Day 37 ~ Wednesday of Holy Week
Share
Opening Prayers:
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Confiteor (see Day 1).
Scripture Reading (John 11:47-50, 53-54):
“The chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, ‘What do we, for this man does many miracles?’ … But one of them, named Caiphas… said: ‘It is expedient for you that one man should die for the people…’ From that day therefore they devised to put Him to death. Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews.”
Reflection:
Today’s scripture brings us to a decisive moment: the Sanhedrin has determined that Jesus must die. Though cloaked in political reasoning, their judgment is ultimately a rejection of the Light. Caiphas’ words—intended to manipulate and condemn—contain a prophetic truth far deeper than he understood: “It is expedient that one man should die for the people.” Indeed, Jesus will soon lay down His life for all.
As Holy Week begins tomorrow, the tempo of Lent shifts. The Cross looms. The shadows deepen. Christ withdraws for a time, no longer walking openly among the people. It is a moment of divine silence before the storm.
This is also a time for us to withdraw inwardly—to silence ourselves, to go deeper into the heart of Lent. Today is a spiritual “still point,” a moment of pause before Palm Sunday and the sacred drama of Holy Week. Let us not waste it.
Ask yourself: What in me resists Jesus? What sins still linger, hidden in the shadows of my heart? What part of my life would rather “stone” Christ or push Him away rather than surrender fully to His reign?
Now is the time to confess, to let go of all darkness. “While you have the light, walk in the light, that the darkness may not overtake you” (John 12:35). Jesus is the Light. Let us walk with Him to the Cross.
Spend 30 minutes in silent prayer today. Meditate on the Passion narrative in John 11 or 18. Ask Our Lord to prepare your heart for Good Friday with humility and courage.
Saintly Insight:
St. Teresa of Ávila wrote, “When we commit sin, we deny our King. We say to Him as the Jews did: ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ O Lord, grant that we may never reject Thee again, but rather reign in our hearts forever.”
Closing Prayers:
V: O Lord, hear my prayer.
R: And let my cry come unto Thee.
V: Let us bless the Lord.
R: Thanks be to God.
V: May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
R: Amen.
