Lenten Reflection Day 28 ~ Saturday Fourth Week of Lent
Share
Opening Prayers:
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Confiteor (see Day 1).
Scripture Reading (John 5:6–9):
“Jesus saith to him: ‘Wilt thou be made whole?’ The infirm man answered him: ‘Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.’ Jesus saith to him: ‘Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.’ And immediately the man was made whole…”
Reflection:
For 38 years, the paralytic man at the pool of Bethesda had suffered—waiting, hoping, and perhaps despairing. Yet his long illness became the very occasion for a divine encounter. Jesus asks him a piercing question: “Wilt thou be made whole?”
It is a question Jesus asks each of us during Lent. Do we truly desire healing and wholeness? Are we willing to let go of the habits, excuses, and dependencies that keep us spiritually crippled? Sometimes we say we want to change, but cling to the familiar chains. The question Jesus asks cuts through all that: Do you want to be healed?
Notice the man’s response: he doesn’t say yes or no—he explains why he hasn’t been healed. We, too, can fall into blame or excuses: “I had no help… others blocked me…” But Jesus doesn’t accept delay. He commands: “Arise… walk.” And the man obeys—his healing is complete.
So it is with us. When we hear Christ’s word and respond in obedience, grace acts swiftly. Lent is a time to rise from the paralysis of sin, to stop waiting passively for someone else to help us improve, and to take up our cross and walk toward Easter.
What is your spiritual “bed”—that comfort or passivity you’ve been lying on too long? Jesus is telling you to rise today. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or someone else’s help. His grace is sufficient.
Identify one area in your life where you’ve been spiritually stagnant—something you’ve been putting off, excusing, or justifying. Resolve to take one step forward today. Even a small act of obedience, done in faith, can unleash healing.
Saintly Insight:
“The devil tries to make us feel powerless. But remember: God never asks what you cannot give. He gives what He asks, and He is never outdone in generosity.” ~ St. Teresa of Avila
When Jesus commands the paralytic to walk, He also gives the power to do so. When He asks us to change, He gives the grace to make it possible.
Closing Prayers:
V: O Lord, hear my prayer.
R: And let my cry come unto Thee.
V: Let us bless the Lord.
R: Thanks be to God.
V: May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
R: Amen.
